When You Feel Like Giving Up—Don’t

There will be moments in your journey—on the mat and in life—when everything feels hard. Progress seems slow, frustration builds, and the voice in your head starts to whisper that maybe it’s not worth it. Maybe you’re not improving. Maybe you don’t belong. These moments are real, and everyone who has ever committed to something meaningful has faced them. But when you feel like giving up, that is often the exact moment you shouldn’t.

In Jiu Jitsu, feeling stuck is part of the process. There are days when nothing works, when you’re always on the defensive, or when you leave class feeling defeated. It’s easy to measure your success by taps, wins, or how you compare to others—but that’s not where real growth happens. Progress in Jiu Jitsu is often invisible day to day. It builds slowly, quietly, beneath the surface, until one day you realize something that used to feel impossible now feels natural. If you give up in the middle of that process, you never get to see what you were capable of becoming.

The truth is, growth only happens when things are difficult. Comfort doesn’t change you—challenge does. Every tough round, every failed attempt, every moment you feel like you’re not good enough is actually shaping you into something stronger. These are the moments where resilience is built. Showing up when it’s hard matters far more than showing up when it’s easy. Discipline—not motivation—is what carries you forward.

It’s also important to remember that you’re not alone in feeling this way. Everyone on the mat, no matter their rank or experience, has had moments where they questioned themselves. The difference is that they kept going. They showed up again the next day, even when they didn’t feel like it. Over time, those small decisions to stay consistent added up to something powerful.

Sometimes, what you need isn’t to push harder—but to shift your perspective. Instead of focusing on what’s not working, focus on what you’re learning. Celebrate small victories: understanding a position a little better, staying calm under pressure, or simply making it through class on a tough day. These moments matter. They are proof that you are moving forward, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

There’s also value in remembering why you started. Whether it was to feel stronger, build confidence, manage stress, or try something new, that reason still matters. Reconnecting with your “why” can help ground you when doubt creeps in. It reminds you that this journey is bigger than any single bad day or tough class.

And just as importantly, lean on your community. Training partners, coaches, and teammates are part of your support system. Talk to them, learn from them, and let them encourage you when you feel low. The Jiu Jitsu community is built on shared struggle, and chances are, someone has been exactly where you are right now.

When you feel like giving up, don’t. Take a breath. Take a step back if you need to—but don’t walk away. Keep showing up, keep trying, and trust the process. The days that test you the most are often the ones that shape you the deepest.

Because in the end, it’s not about never wanting to quit—it’s about choosing not to.
